As the spring sports season approaches its close, the Burroughs High School golf team is holding strong, looking to secure its spot at the top of the Mojave River League and finish the year on a high note as they continue to build momentum and confidence as a team.
After an unfortunate loss to Apple Valley last Thursday, April 16, the team is keeping their head high, now holding a record of 10-3. This achievement, though produced in the face of challenge, has been both noteworthy and filled with excitement, with the team shattering records in total scoring and individual performance along the way.
“I think our success so far has been the result of hard work and dedication,” said senior Colton Gray. “Throughout the season, we’ve stayed consistent and shown up for ourselves, and the results show it.”
Looking ahead, the team has two remaining matches against Serrano and Sultana at home before they take on the league finals. In the league finals tournament, 36 players will compete across the six schools in the Mojave River League, with only 16 making it to the second day of competition and 8 being recognized as all-league players. While this final push will be tough, the team has high expectations and an even higher drive to succeed.
“I’m really proud of what the team has accomplished, and as captain, I’ve tried to keep everyone motivated and working hard,” said Captain Caleb Villecana. “As the season comes to a close, my goals are for us to secure our spot as the #2 team in the league and for all of our top 6 to make day two of league finals.”
