Burroughs Parker Performing Arts Center is gearing up for its annual Winter Concert, set to take place Tuesday, Dec. 9.
The event welcomes students, families, community members, and anyone eager to hear an evening filled with music. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., with performances beginning promptly at 6:30. General admission is $10, and BHS staff and students enter free of charge.
Featuring a record eight ensembles, the concert is one of the year’s biggest music events. It stands as a collaboration between the two music directors, Amber Petersen and Brian Cosner, showing that both the instrumental and vocal programs are ready for a full night of performance. For Vocal & Orchestra Director Petersen, the anticipation is building.
“I think our students are well prepared for this concert, and I am looking forward to hearing them reach their potential,” Petersen said. She noted that the groups’ progress throughout the semester has been striking, and she feels confident that audiences will hear music reflecting that growth.
The various groups taking the stage are Symphonic Band, Stage Band, Cadet Band, and Wind Ensemble under Cosner’s direction. Petersen will conduct Concert Choir, Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra, and Madrigals, rounding out a diverse musical lineup that spans levels, styles, and sound. With so many different groups participating, preparation has required careful attention from both directors.
“One of the more difficult aspects of teaching ensembles with varying degrees of skills and experience is selecting repertoire that is engaging, challenging enough for everyone, but not too challenging,” Petersen said. “Managing the repertoire selections and balancing that along with the overall presentation with eight different ensembles is quite the task.”
Even with the challenge of selecting and coordinating music, Petersen expressed confidence that rehearsals have paid off. She believes students are reaching a point where they can step into the spotlight, demonstrate their work, and make the evening something special.
“I feel like our students are poised to perform a great concert!” said Petersen. “I am exceedingly proud of the progress that I hear each ensemble gaining, daily, and I think this concert will be a great gift for our community!”
With holiday music, months of preparation, and a packed program, the Winter Concert promises a night of talent and celebration. Whether attending to support a friend, enjoy seasonal performances, or simply to listen, audience members can expect an evening centered around student dedication and musical growth.
Tickets will be available at the door, and seating is open to all. For Burroughs musicians, the performance marks the highlight of the winter season. For the community, it represents a chance to see and hear the work happening inside the Burroughs music rooms all year long.
