Burroughs High School hosted a large track and field invitational meet on March 7, welcoming more than 14 schools from across the region to compete at the Burroughs track.
Teams gathered in Ridgecrest for a day of competition across events. While skies were clear throughout the meet, athletes faced off against strong winds reaching nearly 20 miles per hour, creating challenging conditions for runners and field athletes alike.
Despite the wind, several Burroughs athletes delivered strong performances throughout the day. Distance runners posted fast times in the 1600-meter and 800-meter races, while sprinters and hurdlers recorded competitive finishes despite the gusty conditions. Field events also saw solid marks in the long jump, high jump, and throwing events as athletes from across the region competed throughout the afternoon.
Senior runner Kaydence Stewart said the meet remained enjoyable for athletes despite the difficult conditions.
“It was a picture-perfect day for a track meet aside from the wind,” Stewart said. “We had over 14 schools show up and compete despite the conditions. We all had a lot of fun and ran some crazy fast times even with 20 mph winds!”
Hosting the invitational allowed Burroughs athletes to compete in front of a home crowd while welcoming teams from across the region to Ridgecrest. Spectators lined the track throughout the day as athletes rotated through events, creating an energetic atmosphere despite the windy weather.
The Burros will return to the track Tuesday, March 10, when they host Apple Valley in their first league meet of the season at Burroughs High School.
