Beginning with the Class of 2027, Burroughs High School students are required to obtain a valid driver’s license in order to graduate, as passed at a recent SSUSD board meeting.
Board members say the change is meant to better prepare students for life after high school, particularly in a community like Ridgecrest where public transportation options are limited.
Students will need to pass both the written and behind-the-wheel driving tests through the DMV before receiving their diploma.
Principal April Fuuls said the idea came after discussions about practical life skills.
“We’ve talked for years about what students really need when they leave here,” said Fuuls. “For many of them, being able to drive safely is part of being independent. Whether it’s getting to a job or attending college, transportation plays a big role. This gives students a practical skill they can use right away after graduation.”
The requirement also includes the addition of a semester-long driver’s education course during the school day. The class will cover traffic laws, basic car maintenance, and supervised driving practice in the student parking lot.
Auto Shop teacher Steve McQueen will begin teaching the course for the 2026-27 school year.
“Many students don’t realize how important driving becomes until they actually need it,” said McQueen. “Learning it at school puts them in a better position after they graduate.”
Student reactions have been mixed. Junior Annie Ngo worried about the added pressure.
“I have zero progress on my permit, so now I have to hustle to complete it,” said Ngo. “Getting a license wasn’t at the top of my priorities, yet it’s plopped in with the new proposal.”
Senior Dustin Bui, who does not currently have a driver’s license, said he was relieved the policy would not apply to his graduating class.
“I’ve made it this far without one,” said Bui. “I can’t imagine having to rush and learn to graduate.”
However, junior Ryan Carter said the policy could be helpful.
“A lot of people wait too long to learn,” said Carter. “If the school helps you, at least everyone has the same chance.”
More details about how the requirement will be implemented, including scheduling for the course and access to behind-the-wheel practice, will be shared later this year.
