Students who would normally be allowed to leave campus during lunch will no longer be able to under an extension of the new closed campus rules.
As students adjust to this change, many have mixed feelings of disappointment and satisfaction.
“I was looking forward to being able to leave campus now that I am in high school so I could get food,” said freshman Anessah Suleman, “but now I can’t even do the freshman mile to Stater Bros.”
Although the initial adjustments needed to adhere to this policy may be difficult, it has the potential to help improve the school atmosphere. With so many students staying at school during lunch, new friend groups are starting to gather and spend quality time together.
“It’s kind of refreshing,” says junior Katie Brouchoud. “It feels like we are unified as a school and socializing much better.”
This policy, however, is not only affecting students, as teachers and administrators have their own comments about the policy’s effectiveness. Administrators generally agree that the limitation of students will promote more safety and enhance the school environment, while many teachers are overwhelmed by the concept.
“I love having kids in my room during lunch,” said Math Teacher Gio Metri. “But I am slightly worried about having too many kids in there all at once and just how much capacity each teacher’s class will take in.”
Fears such as Metri’s are not uncommon around the school as many teachers who had previously been willing to allow students in during lunch share the same general concern.
So now as we enter into this new time at our school with the emergence of this new closed-campus system, navigating the new rule may be hard, but we will persevere through it and possibly, it will lead to a better school.
