On December 20, members of the Interact Club traveled to Pasadena to participate in the long-standing tradition of decorating the Rotary International float for the Rose Parade.
This year’s Rotary float invited viewers to “Unite for Good,” which the Burroughs Interactors did. Float-decorating requires hundreds of hours of manual labor, and the Burroughs students joined a team of volunteers to help complete the designs before the New Year’s Day deadline.
Throughout the day, students worked on applying natural materials such as delicate flower petals and seeds to the massive float structure. The Rose Parade rules require every inch of the floats to be covered in organic materials, and each piece had to be carefully glued or placed by hand. This process gave the students a first-hand look at the immense level of craftsmanship required to create a display for a nationally televised audience, echoing the Rose Parade’s theme of “The Magic in Teamwork.”
By volunteering their time, these students participated in community service and helped contribute to a celebration seen nationally. The project provided a productive way for the group to kick off winter break.
“Seeing the float all together on the news makes all the hard work my peers and I put into it so worth it,” said senior Jayden Nevarez, marking her third year at the float-decorating event.
Other Burroughs Interactors who participated included Emaan Ahmad, Sehar Chaudhary, Amanda Garcia, Gabriel Garcia, Miguel Guerrero, Hasnain Javaid, Anko Luzinas, Michael Munoz, and Nicolas Ramsay.
