For many, New York Fashion Week is a vibrant celebration of identity, creativity, and the heart of fashion.
During this year’s event, 2019 BHS graduate Enyssa Armendariz strutted down the runway, not only showcasing the designs but also representing the dreams of many who’ve walked along the halls of Burroughs.
Armendariz’ path to the fashion industry began in middle school, where she had to wear a uniform and follow a strict dress code. She says this limited opportunity to explore fashion only fueled her passion for style and self-expression.
“I’ve always been creative and I don’t like feeling like I can’t express myself,” said Armendariz. “Fashion helps me express myself creatively and gives me a lot of confidence in who I am.”
That confidence was on full display once she moved on to Burroughs, where she found herself able to explore her personal style more freely. As a high school student, she was deeply involved in the school’s community, participating in four years of cheerleading, serving in ASB, and joining several clubs. Her leadership and enthusiasm set her apart in both the classroom and on the sidelines, and she was well-prepared to take on the challenges of life after high school.
From a small town to a big city, Armendariz headed to San Diego State University before settling in Los Angeles. Her journey through California’s busiest areas prepared her for one of the biggest moments of her life so far, New York Fashion Week.
“In the last few years of living in the city, I am the healthiest and most confident I’ve ever been in my life,” said Armendariz. “As much as I love my hometown, I am glad to not feel held back from being the best version of myself.”
After graduating from Burroughs, Armendariz earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from SDSU followed by a master’s degree in business management from Loyola Marymount University, with a clear focus in mind.
“The goal is to become a professional in the luxury fashion industry,” said Armendariz. She says that modeling is helping her be involved in every aspect of the field.
Armendariz didn’t become a New York Fashion Week model overnight, although she sees a logical connection between her studies and her eventual career goal.
“I started modeling a few years back with small jobs here and there,” said Armendariz. Last year she modeled for Los Angeles Fashion Week.
This year’s NYFW gig had her modeling for Urban Pigeons, a high-end fashion and streetwear clothing label “for those who appreciate music, culture, and creativity.”
Knowing Armendariz, that sounds like the perfect fit.
