English teacher Rosemary Gilbert and her classes have been participating in a fundraiser for “Room to Read” an international nonprofit organization, in the form of a bake sale.
The mission of “Room to Read” is to provide books to low-income children all over the world in their native languages.
“Room to Read focuses more on literacy and life skills programs for girls who have historically not had the same opportunities as their counterparts,” said Gilbert. “Overall, Room to Read wants to reach the 773 million people in our world who are illiterate. Reading combined with an education can never be taken away from you like wealth, health, and personal possessions can. Reading opens the doors to limitless possibilities in life.”
To drive this fundraiser, students across all of Gilbert’s classes have chipped in, providing supplies, donations, and a variety of baked goods.
“Students who want to bake cookies for the sale bring them prepackaged in sandwich bags,” said Gilbert. “I typically spend a few evenings baking batches of cookies for the sale”
Each Friday, students are able to bring $1 bills and purchase cookies of their choice. Student helpers then count the money, determining how much each class raised.
So far the bake sales have done extremely well, with $127 raised so far this semester, with more sales coming up.
“Seniors and freshmen have contributed baked goods for the cause,” said Gilbert. “My students are super cool kids, and I appreciate their enthusiasm, whether it is baking or eating! “
