Read Across America week is an annual event that encourages reading and promotes every child in communities to celebrate reading.
Burroughs High School Company Class designates a majority of their time for the entire week. This year, they attended Faller, Gateway, and Pierce elementary schools to act out books, like “The Dinky Donkey,” “Three Little Kittens,” and “Lion Lessons” for the children.
Eileen Poole recognizes the great amount of dedication and hard work her students do to prepare.
“We select multiple books, decide how to act out each story, choose actors for the roles, make all of the props, and rehearse,” said Poole.
Poole enjoys watching the older kids work together to make the younger ones smile.
Senior Ethan Walter is always a huge hit with the audience for his impeccable comedic timing.
“The first time you get on stage it is a bit awkward, but once you’re up there you realize it is all worth it,” said Walter.
The young kids seem to think all of the performers are celebrities; asking for high fives, giving fist bumps, and chanting their names.
They are all able to work together by understanding one another. Each of the students added their own touch and they were able to blend it all together.
The best part is getting to see the kids’ reactions and the joy in the room.
“It is another reason why I love teaching in this district,” said Poole.
