After taking some time to get some footing for their team, several trap shooters from the Great Outdoors Club have entered the spring semester with a bang.
Five shooters from the previous year’s team, along with one freshman with prior experience in the sport, went to the Apple Valley Gun Club on Jan 13 to participate in the first Five Star shoot of 2024.
Since the Five Star League separates shooters based on shot totals, the team was split between the three divisions: Novice, with a handicap of 19 yards; Junior, with a handicap of 21 yards; and Pro, with a handicap of 24 yards.
Our shooters went up against other young competitors from around Southern California, with everyone from Burroughs shooting above 50% of all targets. Despite no placement from our team, it was still a good opener to get them set up for the upcoming weeks.
Freshman Anthony Saavedra turned in one of the best performances.
“There was a lot of help and good advice,” said Saavedra. “I think I need to work on focusing. Towards the end, I choked up and scored a low score. Focus is the key!”
Below are the scores from each of our shooters along with their handicap level in parentheses.
JP SCHNEITER: 89/100 (Pro)
ANTHONY SAAVEDRA: 87/100 (Pro)
COBY BELTRAMO: 79/100 (Junior)
RYAN SMITH: 72/100 (Junior)
ELIJAH DIAZ: 63/100 (Novice)
BRODEY ZADE : 59/100 (Novice)
Schneiter went into the competition hoping to hit 100, “but it did not happen,” he said. He and the others will have another chance this weekend.
