The BHS student body spent last month gathering non-perishable food for families in need in Key Club’s annual canned food drive, a partnership with Salvation Army. They raised an estimated 700 lbs.
From Nov. 8 to Dec. 5, the club raised over 500 cans.
Key Club Advisor and Science Teacher Melanie Branson’s fourth-period Honors Biology class collected the most cans with a total of 171 thanks to the competition she had between her classes.
“I really wanted that party with donuts before finals, so my friends and I made a plan together to bring as much cans as we could,” said freshman Alexis Zwierzchwoski.
Salvation Army greatly appreciated the BHS students’ initiative. They have around 150 more families they are helping than in previous years, so donated items are desperately needed. They are always willing to take more donated non-perishable foods!
Club President Xiomara Rivero expressed her happiness at the result of this year’s canned food drive.
“This year’s food drive was a success,” said Rivero. “Although we didn’t get as much as last year, Salvation Army was still very glad to receive the cans we did collect. We are also excited to see the turnout of cans everyone was able to come with.”
