On Thursday Sept. 14, Multicultural Club had their second annual potluck during their third meeting of the year. The potluck was well received by the club’s members. Over 40 attended and they all pitched in to make it a huge success!
Multicultural Club President Julia Hechanova was pleased with the turnout of people.
“I wasn’t expecting a full classroom before we could even advertise the club at Club Day, but we definitely had the room filled, which was great,” said Hechanova.
BHS students had a fun time filling their plates up with food from all over the world and chatting with their friends. The potluck gave them a chance to connect with other cultures as well as share their own. Some of the dishes brought included Vietnamese egg rolls and fried rice, chips and salsa, spam musubi, chicken legs, stir-fried noodles and pasta, brownies, and a fruit platter with tajin and chamoy.
Junior Zion Ortiz enjoyed the atmosphere of the potluck.
“Everyone being together and getting to try foods I’ve never tried before was the best part,” said Ortiz. “Honestly, I can’t even pick a favorite dish from it. They were all really good!”
Vice President Lynkim Phan expressed how the potluck showed what the club is all about, bringing people together despite whatever cultural differences they have.
“It is truly incredible to see such a diverse gathering, where people bring in their cultural dishes to share and also have fun exploring various cultures,” said Phan.
It’s quite plain to see that these uniting potlucks will remain a prominent tradition for Multicultural. However, the officers have much more than just potluck events in store for their club members. They want to make museum visits a tradition as well. They plan on arranging a field trip to the Cesar Chavez Monument later this year. There will also be many club bonding activities, including bake sales, karaoke nights, and eating out at restaurants.
“Multicultural’s mission is always to spread awareness about how much culture impacts our society and us individually,” said Hechanova.
If you’re interested in joining Multicultural Club, they meet every other Wednesday at lunch in room K-5. Their next meeting is October 24.
