The 2023-2024 Yearbook staff is hoping to create a fresh addition for Burroughs’ growing shelves of memories.
From July 24-27, Burroughs seniors Alissa Marcano, Kaylee Cooper, Jayani Croos, and Sadie Cox attended a four-day Jostens leadership camp where they learned about various techniques for page layouts and maintaining a theme. They worked together to select their yearbook’s theme, color scheme, and fonts. Their well-planned vision and hard work at camp earned them two awards. More importantly, it prepared them for the busy year to come.
“I really appreciate how well they are doing to start us off strong,” said Yearbook Advisor Susie Burgess.
Senior Co-Editor Alissa Marcano had a lot of takeaways from the camp, but she found the team-bonding aspect to be the most interesting as the leadership team got really close in a matter of days.
“I value the memories we made together through it,” said Marcano. She is also excited about the cover they decided on at the camp since it will be unique. Coincidentally, during camp they worked with Jostens artist Mark Mello, who attended Burroughs in 1973. Since he knew the school, he helped them realize their creative vision.
While the look of the yearbook is important, it’s the content of the pages that has the students really inspired. As always, it is the Yearbook staff’s goal to maximize coverage of the student body in their spreads. They want to have everyone pictured at least three times.
To help them create a book everyone will feel part of, this year they are implementing a program called Yearbook+, which will allow them to digitally incorporate more photos of school events. In addition to overflow photos by staff photographers, students will be able to upload their own photos to be featured!
So far, the leadership team has been guiding the members of the class through photography essentials and how to navigate the Jostens design software with practice pages and templates.
Two major parts of the class are the support it receives from local businesses and, of course, the photos that the yearbook is centered around! Business Manager Jayani Croos-Peterson and Photo Manager Sadie Cox, both seniors, are spearheading those efforts.
Croos-Peterson is in charge of organizing all of the ads the class sells. She also manages the Yearbook Instagram account (@elburroyearbook). She hopes Burroughs students will give their opinion on what they would want in the yearbook spreads. This would be through polls that will be put out on the account.
Cox makes the photography element of the class run smoothly. She uploads all of the photos taken to the Jostens website, sorts them into folders, and keeps track of all the camera equipment. She has been encouraging the members of the class to take as many pictures as they can of school happenings from unique perspectives.
“We want to focus on authenticity,” said Senior Co-Editor Kaylee Cooper.
One of the group’s most important tasks is coming up next month as they assist Sierra Photography with senior photos. The senior photo shoots, which are free to all seniors, will take place at Burroughs Oct. 19-21. Senior families should look for more information from Sierra Photography to come to the email on file with the high school.
