Blockbuster Blast: A Quick Etymology

An+issue+from+our+archives+offers+a+blast+from+the+past.

An issue from our archives offers a blast from the past.

When the first issue of the Blockbuster was printed 75 years ago, the nearby Naval base, first known as the Naval Ordinance Test Station, was just as critical to the identity of Ridgecrest as it is today. Perhaps referencing the base’s ongoing accomplishments in weapons development, the journalism students of Sherman E. Burroughs High School named their paper “Blockbuster,” suggesting both a commercial “hit” and a conventional explosive device powerful enough to level a non-negligible portion of a city. The explosive heritage of the paper has been revived in the naming of the Blockbuster website, the Blockbuster Blast, an impactful reminder of our past and a promise for more bombshells to come.
