On Friday, March 20, Burroughs High School hosted its first indoor rally since 2019, bringing a renewed sense of energy and connection to the ASB-sponsored event.
Since returning from COVID shutdowns, rallies had been held outside at the stadium, where distance and weather often limited student engagement. After years of consideration, school administration and ASB decided this year’s student body had earned a return to the gym.
“This year, the students’ behavior has been so much better that we thought an indoor rally would be a great way to reward the students,” said Principal Carrie Cope.
Students quickly felt the difference, even though none had ever experienced the boisterous atmosphere of rallies pre-2020.
“I believe the rally felt more personal with the participants, and it was much more spirited,” said junior Aaliyah Melton. “I hope for more indoor rallies. I enjoyed all of the activities and watching the participants.”
Inside the gym, grade levels sat facing each other, bringing students closer to the action and intensifying class competition. Yell-offs became more contagious, with underclassmen attempting to outmatch the seniors in class spirit, while performances like Cheer’s Senior Boys Dance and Teacher Dance were easier for the crowd to see and enjoy.
While the smaller space required Cheer to squish together a bit more with their performers, the overall effect was worth it.
“It was a lot easier for the crowd to see because we were closer,” said Cheer Captain Dannika Nelson. “It felt like the crowd seemed more engaged watching us.”
The indoor setting also created the opportunity for more meaningful moments. Near the end of the rally, ASB showed a sentimental farewell video honoring Assistant Principal Chris Ostermann, who is set to retire after 39 years at BHS.
For many students, the improved experience was simple but significant.
“I was glad that it wasn’t so hot and it was easier to follow what was going on,” said sophomore Chester Cook.
Whether indoor rallies continue, however, depends on students maintaining the behavior that made this return possible.
“I think the likelihood depends on the students’ behavior,” said Cope. “Having the whole school in the gym requires the students to be well-behaved. I want them to remain in the gym.”
For ASB Rallymaster Marlee Hildreth, it was a great end to this year’s rallies.
“I think the inside rally went great and the energy was incomparable to others that we’ve had before,” said Hildreth. “I hope everyone loved participating in BurroChella just as much as ASB did hosting it!”
