The King of Hearts dance was a success on Saturday, Feb. 1!
This year’s Top 11 included Parker Anderson, Jayden Bostick, Eduardo Cazares, Mikey Chaco, Pablo Giron, Jeremiah Heale-Reitnauer, Hank Lint, Anthony Martinez, Zion Ortiz, Logan Tomlinson, and Brodey Zade. Vying for the crown were the Top Three: Pablo Giron, Jeremiah Heale-Reitnauer, and Zion Ortiz. Voting took place at the dance, with Zion Ortiz winning the title.
“I didn’t think I was going to win,” said Ortiz. “I was rooting for the others on Top Three, so when they said I was the winner, it felt pretty crazy and unexpected!”
This year’s theme, “Garden of Dreams,” set the stage for an unforgettable evening. The dance was put on by ASB sophomores, who had been hard at work to make it a night to remember.
“Once we had secured the theme, ‘Garden of Dreams,’ we began to search for inspiration in order to buy and build a dreamy, floral dance,” said Sophomore Class President Taylor Johnson. “We hired a photo booth and DJ with cold-sparks to elevate the students’ experience. It was super awesome working together and pooling our creativity to make our vision come true.”
All of their work paid off in the end, leaving ASB proud of their work.
“I thought that the dance went great!” said Johnson. “Everyone in ASB did an amazing job helping our vision come to life, and I was very satisfied with the final product.”
Prior to the dance, students enjoyed a “Camp Burro” Winter Rally Week, with four days of easy spirit days: Beach Camping v. Mountain Camping Tuesday, Cozy Campfire Wednesday, Camo Thursday, and Flannel Friday. On Tuesday, freshmen and sophomores wore blue and yellow, while juniors and seniors wore brown and green. For Cozy Campfire Wednesday, students wore comfy clothes, and for Camo Thursday, students wore camouflage. Lastly, on Flannel Friday, students dressed as lumberjacks and wore their favorite flannel.
ASB also worked hard to put together an entertaining rally highlighting the winter sports teams. This year CSF also participated, competing in a potato sack race and fishing game to go along with the theme.
“I thought the rally was very interesting to watch,” said junior Emilia Tippetts. “I especially loved watching the teachers dance with the cheerleaders, and it was fun to see my friends playing games on the field.”
Participants in the teacher dance included Spanish Teacher Kayla Monk, Science Teacher Jessica Wilson, Science Teacher Melissa Thompson, ASB Advisor Laura Larson, Health Teacher Stacey Crow, English Teacher Peter Marvin, English Teacher Kaitlin Hailey, Paraprofessional Melissa Armendariz, English Teacher/TOSA Dave Gerber, PE Teacher Ryan Kaufman, Health Careers Teacher Maryssa Flentye, Math Teacher Joanna Rock, Math Teacher Katie Wadley, English Teacher Rosemary Gilbert, Math Teacher Tommy Wooding, English Teacher Airean Robison, TOSA Doug Hayes, Math Teacher Amy Shermer, Assistant Principal Chris Ostermann, and Principal Carrie Cope.
“I had an amazing time doing the teacher dance at the rally!” said Marvin. “I am not a good dancer, so it is fun to go outside of my comfort zone to try something new. I think the best part of the dance is practice because the cheer captains lead the whole practice and are in charge of all their teachers. It was really fun to see my students take on the role of teachers!”
The cheerleaders had fun as well.
“I always enjoy the teacher-cheerleader dance every year,” said cheerleader Paige Dunn, a junior. “At the rally this year, it was so much fun with lots of different dances from all the teachers and cheerleaders. The practice beforehand was definitely a little crazy at first with getting all the teachers in lines and teaching them their dance, but after all of that, it was really fun to see how all of our teachers performed!”
