Burroughs senior Brodey Zade had a summer to remember as he participated in the Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. The program offered Zade an exciting opportunity to connect with seasoned journalists and engage in valuable learning experiences in the nation’s capital.
Throughout the week, Zade explored Washington D.C. Highlights included a visit to the National Press Club, where he heard from Washington Post reporters Carmella Boykin and Tom Jackman and attended sessions with Andrias White, an anchor on WTVR CBS 6, and Laura Barron-Lopez, a White House Correspondent for PBS NewsHour. A standout moment for Zade was his interview with Rep. Vince Fong. Zade says he hopes to use the interview in a future story discussing what Congress is doing for the country.
The summer session was an ideal opportunity for Zade, who plans to pursue a degree and career in journalism. The conference allowed him to build on his experience as a third-year member of the Blockbuster staff, multimedia broadcaster with the AV Club, and student representative for the SSUSD School Board.
“My favorite part of the program was meeting new people from across the country and making meaningful connections,” he said. “The skills I learned and the people I met will help further my education and future career.”
The week wasn’t all work, though. Zade and his peers enjoyed exploring D.C., from the Botanic Gardens to the Library of Congress, and even capped off their experience with a lively gala.
Reflecting on his time at the conference, Zade expressed his gratitude for the skills and connections he gained.
“My time in D.C. is an experience that I will never forget,” Zade said.
