With a new school year starting, it can be difficult to navigate all the opportunities you have in high school. However, once broken down into digestible slices, it becomes a piece of cake!
Workload can certainly be overwhelming when you move up a grade. This is why it’s vital to build on your study habits. Remember to take organized notes and use resources like YouTube and Khan Academy. Implementing an organization system , such as a planner, will help you keep track of all your classes. Ask your teachers for help with homework. Find a tutor at the Academic Learning Lounge.
High school is the perfect time to experiment and find out what you like. Electives are a surefire way, but they also require commitment. This includes CTE courses for juniors and seniors, such as culinary arts and criminal justice. If you possess musicality or want to learn how to play an instrument, don’t hesitate to join choir, orchestra or band! Burroughs also has a series of art classes for those who seek an outlet for artistic expression.
“Burroughs has a lot to offer with the different clubs, sports, and extracurriculars like music and drama,” said Principal Carrie Cope. “Students can come across something that means something, something they want to belong to.”
If you want to further your involvement in the local community, consider joining a campus club!
Friends of Rachel, Key Club, and Interact help you include yourself in a friendly and open environment, while also building service hours for your future resume. If a service club doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, other clubs target niche interests. AV Club, Art Club and Drama Club allow students to channel their inner creativity and display it to the rest of the student body. Others may find their home in Strategy Club, Book Club, or the Great Outdoors, for example.
“Research has shown students who are involved are more successful, but personally I think it makes coming to school more fun and it gives another purpose,” said Cope. “Students are able to find a group of people with similar interests to make friends with, and service clubs provide an avenue to give back to the community.”
ASB-organized events can turn out to be one of the biggest highlights of the high school experience. You won’t want to miss them! ASB works very hard behind the scenes to put out events and spirit days for everyone to participate in. You should definitely go all out for spirit days and rack up points for your graduating class!
“We have the spirit days that are a great way to show school spirit and have fun,” said Assistant Principal Elijah Colpitts. “Volleyball and football season have started. It would be great to come to the games and show support to our awesome athletes. The mini rally on August 23 is a good way to come together as a school to build community and school spirit.”
Many are anticipating the Homecoming dance and the action-packed week that comes with it, and the rallies and dances continue throughout the year.
Above all, it is key to always remember that there will be many chances around to create some memories that will last a lifetime. What matters is how you take advantage of those openings, and your worries about making most of the year will disappear in a flash.
