The El Burro Yearbook leadership team attended an inspiring and productive summer trip to the Jostens National Yearbook Workshop (JNYW) at the University of San Diego from July 22-25. The camp brought together yearbook staff members from across the country, offering a unique opportunity to learn, collaborate, and set the foundation for what promises to be a memorable yearbook.Remove featured image
Senior Daisy Risden, who shares the role of co-editor with fellow senior Alissa Gutierrez, gained many useful skills to put to use with the upcoming yearbook.
“I learned a lot at camp, but what most stuck with me is how important caption writing is and what type of fonts are used,” said Risden. “Fonts are what pull people in because they have to be eye-catching, and caption writing is what keeps them interested.” The team’s attention to detail paid off, as the El Burro Yearbook staff brought home the first-place award in the Staff Theme category for their workshop. “We were able to bring it home because we made the theme very personal towards our town and made it hold significance,” Risden said.
The theme is indeed a special one, as it relates to the school’s 80th anniversary. The editors plan to reach out to the larger Burroughs community, including alumni, to capture the traditions and memories that have made Burroughs what it is.
While Risden learned more about writing and design, Social Media Manager Paige Dunn focused on her area of concentration.
“I attended a social media/marketing class that went over ways to help put our yearbook out there and bring our school together through social media and the yearbook,” said Dunn. Her efforts in this area were recognized when she won second place in the Individual Project category for her Instagram post introducing the 2024-25 Yearbook Leadership team. “Being able to bring home an award was a complete shock because I was not expecting it at all. I felt very proud of myself for being able to complete it in one day and even get an award for it.”
For Co-Editor Alissa Gutierrez, the camp was a blend of creativity and validation.
“I learned how to make a cohesive yearbook and got tons of new creative ideas,” said Gutierrez. “I was very proud to bring the award home as it showed that our hard work and stress paid off.”
As the team looks ahead to the upcoming school year, they are filled with excitement and anticipation.
“I am looking forward to making a book I can be proud to share with the whole school as well as teaching some of my peers how to make the book special and be creative,” said Gutierrez.
With such a dedicated and talented leadership team, the 2024-2025 El Burro Yearbook is sure to be a treasured addition to Burroughs High School’s storied history.
Yearbooks are on sale now through the school or online at Jostens.com. Purchasers are encouraged to get their books early before prices increase at the end of the month.
