Have you seen the Chaos Walking movie with Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley? Were you as underwhelmed and confused as I was? Well don’t worry, cause the saying “the book was better than the movie” is true in this case.
The book trilogy Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness is a series about a dystopian society where every living creature can hear everyone else’s thoughts through images and sounds, giving it the name Noise. The series follows a young man named Todd Hewitt who lives in New World. A world that settlers moved to, trying to escape overpopulation in the Old World (Earth).
Throughout his entire life, Todd has lived in Prentisstown, a town with the last people on the planet. A town with only men. Todd has never met a woman, let alone a girl, in all of his life, believing them to be all dead. That is until he met Viola Eade, who has no Noise.
Viola is a settler from the Old World, coming to scout the planet before the rest of the settlers come. While entering the atmosphere, her ship malfunctioned and crashed into the New World. After waking up, Viola is surrounded by the roaring of the Noise. As she goes to scout the area, Viola runs into Todd and finds she can hear everything he is thinking.
After running into each other, Todd and Viola set off on a journey to find a way for Viola to contact her ship and escape from the evil mayor of Prentisstown. As you follow the two on their journey to save their world, you are bound to go on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will even get angry on the character’s behalf.
These three books have become one of my favorite series. I like how we see both Todd and Viola grow as characters and come to trust each other along the way. Not only do they grow as individuals, but they cause each other to grow while they work together.
This series is a great series for readers who love sci-fi, dystopian societies, and extremely wholesome slow-burn romances. I would never stop recommending this series to others and is definitely a must-read!
