Sarah J. Mass is a well-known author whose popularity is growing once again. Especially with her most recent book, “House of Flame and Shadow”, released in January.
With three successful series under her belt, Maas has developed a big fan base. With more than 1.7 million followers on her Instagram page, Maas is able to give her readers updates on her works.
“I think SJM’s books are very popular because they are very imaginative and can draw you away from reality very easily,” said junior Lauren Calderon. “I started reading SJM’s books because they were recommended by a friend since I haven’t read any books before.”
“Her books have a lot of plot twists and the characters have a good friendship with one another where they become a family,” said senior Sophia Sy Qui.
As the years go by, Maas has perfected her story-creating technique.
“Her world-building is inspiring. With the release of the second Crescent City book two years ago, she surprised her readers with a cliffhanger we did not expect,” said English teacher Ernestina Wilson. “I also appreciate that all her female main characters are strong, opinionated, and independent, even in their flaws.”
As more and more people become fans and read her works, a theory has begun to grow in Maas’s fanbase.
“Since then “Bookstagram”, “BookTok” and podcasts have been rereading and theorizing how it all comes together in all of her three series (“Throne of Glass”, “A Court of Thorns and Roses”, and “Crescent City”),” said Wilson. “I am now just beginning to reread the entire series to find connections I didn’t catch the first time.”
“I think the theory is super cool because all my favorite characters have a chance of interacting,” said Sy Qui.
As fans continue to read all three series of Mass’s books, they are starting to see the similarities between the books. Like how the Truth God/Sin Eater in “Throne of Glass” is like the Bone Carver from “A Court of Thorns and Roses” being the same character. Another connection fans believe connects the three worlds is Bryce’s Star Sword from the “Cresent City” series is actually the missing sword, Gwydion, from “A Court of Thorns and Roses.”
As Maas continues to release books, this theory of the three worlds being connected continues to grow. As of right now, it is only a theory.
“I will recommend these books forever for readers who love fantasy and strong, powerful, and magical characters,” said Wilson.
