During the winter and spring rallies, students got to see some unexpected musical talent as senior Sabrina Wells, sophomore Sasha Hamaker, and junior Brett Hiatt performed in front of the school.
Wells played the acoustic guitar during the KOH rally and had the crowd intrigued by her performance.
“I don’t have issues with stage fright, so it was really fun to perform in front of an entire audience,” said Wells. “Once you realize that nobody will notice if you mess up it gets a lot easier. As an example, I once messed up the entire bridge of a song and people just thought I added my own section to it.”
Wells’ family is also involved with music, which made her become interested with the guitar. She loves the experience that comes from playing.
“My favorite part of playing is when I finally get a song into my muscle memory, when I don’t have to think about playing it and it just happens,” said Wells.
The most recent rally gave Burroughs the opportunity to hear the Black Heartstrings, which includes Hamaker and Hiatt. The band took to the stage during the Spring Rally.
The crowd was extremely engaged during their performance, which featured songs such as The Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop.”
“We always do a lot of practices together so we can perfect our songs for the set we play,” said Hamaker.
Hiatt, a drummer, and Hamaker, a bassist, became friends and soon enough found out about the passion they both had for music. From then on, they created a band and met many amazing people along the way.
“Playing at various venues is my favorite,” said Hiatt. “I also like spending time with the people I’m most close to while performing.”
