If you have any form of social media, you’ve likely come across a current obsession: Stanley Cups.
Stanley Cups are large, insulated tumblers that come in a variety of colors, ranging from basic neutrals to vibrant neons. Store shelves are lined with the cups, and seemingly everyone is carrying one around as they go about their daily life.
The cups, however, have caused some controversy. Just recently, videos surfaced of frenzied customers flocking to buy a special edition Starbucks Stanley at Target stores across the nation. Some camped overnight in front of their local Target, while others engaged in physical fights as they attempted to get one of the few remaining cups.
With so many people going to great lengths to buy a cup, what makes Stanley so special? Many credit the strength and appearance of the cup.
“[They’re] durable,” said junior Makynna Freund. “I’ve dropped mine 20 million times.”
“[They’re] cute and aesthetic,” said junior Mackenzy Crow.
Causing mass chaos in stores is not the only issue that Stanley has faced. Many of the cup users have recently discovered that the cup is sealed with a small bit of lead, which is covered by a layer of stainless steel. Though the lead is covered, damage to the cup can lead to lead exposure. Being exposed to lead can cause a variety of health issues, including high blood pressure and kidney problems.
Despite the potential risks of lead exposure, many still plan to use Stanley cups.
“I probably will still use my Stanley,” said senior Sadie Cox. “I have too many to just stop using and [getting] rid of them.”
Though being a part of the Stanley cup trend may be enticing, you may want to think twice before you buy.
