Archery practice at Burroughs has officially begun!
On Tues. Jan. 16, the Archery Club hosted their first practice on campus, using their brand new equipment. The club, which was founded in 2021, spent their first couple of years hard at work, raising over $3200 to purchase equipment. With their funds, the club was able to purchase six targets, 60 arrows, and over 15 bows. Members had been participating in weekly practices at Coso Archery using loaned equipment; however, they wanted to host practice on campus to make it more accessible for students.
Members enjoyed the first practice.
“[I liked] being able to shoot again,” said Archery Storage Manager senior Loralie McArtor. “I missed it a lot while waiting for our equipment.”
At their first practice, members unboxed the brand new equipment, set up their practice area, and were finally able to shoot. Practices are held in a fenced off area away from students in order to ensure the safety of members and passerby. The first practice focused mainly on reviewing proper form and handling of the equipment, but the club leaders have big goals for future practices.
“I’m looking forward to practicing with our new equipment and teaching more members how to shoot this upcoming semester,” said Archery Club President senior Addie Gerber.
Members plan to improve their skills as practices continue.
“[My goal is to] improve my accuracy and precision, and get more bullseyes!” said McArtor. “I’m most looking forward to shooting at further targets.”
Though Gerber, the founding member of Archery Club, is graduating this year, she has big dreams for the club beyond this year.
“In five years, I hope the club has a lot of members and is even participating in competitions,” said Gerber.
The Archery Club meets every Tuesday during lunch in M-42. Practices are hosted after school every Tuesday from 3 – 4:30 p.m. The club is open to all students, and they can begin to practice after signing a permission form and passing a simple safety quiz. They hope to see you there!
