Thanksgiving, the famous time when the table is laid with everything you can think of. The time when you spot that familiar dish that has always caught your eye and your heart lightens in anticipation, but it’s also the time when there’s another familiar dish, one that you are decidedly not excited about.
Welcome to Thanksgiving, the most opinionated time of the year.
A poll was made not too long ago, where students were asked for their favorite, and least favorite, food that is served on Thanksgiving. With 194 responses, the results hold a variety of Turkey Day staples and students’ families’ own custom recipes.
With a not very surprising answer, as this is an all-around favorite for most of the world, mashed potatoes came in first place as a favorite food with a percentage of 20.2% and 39 answers. Mashed potatoes can be cooked in countless different ways which means that there’s no way to know that each student is thinking of the exact same recipe, but mashed potatoes are a favorite nonetheless.
Pumpkin pie takes the spot for the second most favorite with 14.5%, and bread rolls come close in third. A few other answers are stuffed peppers, ham, fruit salad, yams, baked mac n cheese, and cornbread.
Now onto the least favorite, and it seems like many people are very passionate about this topic.
Green bean casserole sits in first place with a percentage of 21.8% and 41 answers. In second is cranberry sauce with 15.4%, something the pilgrims heavily valued at their Thanksgiving dinner, but it seems as though times have changed.
Some of the other answers are turkey, olives, stuffing, apple pie, gravy, and sweet potato casserole, all with more than eight answers.
Thanksgiving cooking brings families together like no other. Some relatives are known for their signature dishes or talent, and family members always look forward to whatever they make knowing it is going to exceed their expectations. Recipes are passed down generations and lost loved ones are brought back to celebrate this time.
Restaurants are very popular as well on Thanksgiving, with most places having a Thanksgiving menu for the families that choose to eat out instead.
The comfort the holiday season brings is something that leaves many people looking forward to this time of year, and the food is one of the most important parts.
