It’s time for the BHS Colorguard to wave their flags goodbye for the season, although many of the members will be back as Winterguard in the weeks to come.
The team attended their last competition Nov. 4 at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, where they finished in third place, their best finish of the season.
Team Co-Captain Madison Ray (12) was pleased with their performance, especially since they only had a week to learn the last movement. Ray called it “a jazzy piece with a lot of spinning and turning” to the tune of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
This year’s guard members included Ray, sophomore Fern Coit, sophomore Michael Munoz, senior Paloma Luevano, sophomore Rowan Zade, and sophomore Stephanie Combs.
“We’ve grown a lot,” said Ray. “We’ve learned a lot of new things and succeeded over a lot of challenges with the choreography.”
Tryouts for Winterguard conclude today. Most members are hoping to return for more, although this season they will perform routines without the band.
Team members had high praise for Coach Jenny Esquivel and her choreography. Esquivel tool over the team last year.
“Jenny is so talented and cool,” said Coit. “She is funny, kind, and an amazing teacher. I’ll miss the choreography that we had this season; it was so much fun to do, and it makes me sad that it’s just all gone.”
A high point for the team was the camaraderie shared with one another during practices and competitions. The team practiced Mondays and Wednesdays before school and from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays.
“My favorite thing about colorguard was getting to make amazing friends with people that were not only in colorguard, but in band too,” said Zade. “I also enjoyed traveling for competitions. I made a lot of amazing memories throughout the season.”
The team will be performing in this year’s Christmas Parade on Dec. 9.
