October is here, and so is Homecoming!
With all of the fun and exciting activities occurring, many people forget about the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.
While ASB is responsible for the Amazing Race, floatbuilding, B Mountain, and dodgeball, the BHS Cheerleaders are the ones who put on coronation and the dance. Emotions understandably run high during Homecoming Week, as the cheerleaders are under a lot of pressure.
When the planning begins, cheerleaders have to learn three new routines, get posters ready, and arrange how everything will turn out. While it is quite stressful, it allows the team to come together and form stronger bonds.
“Once everyone gets into the swing of things, it becomes super exciting and rewarding as we see everything come together,” said Mindy Bravo, a Varsity Cheer Captain and one of the HOCO Top Three.
After the cheerleaders choose the theme, the real work begins. In just a few short weeks, the cheer team buys and sets up props, makes gifts for administrators and coaches, and makes posters for football players for their Friday Night Lights game.
Though planning Homecoming adds a lot to the cheerleaders’ schedules, the outcome motivates them to put together an outstanding dance.
“It’s super fulfilling to see everyone enjoy the dance and the rally from the games played to the routines we perform,” said Bravo.
Freshman Madalyn Martin is experiencing her first year on the Burroughs campus and on the varsity cheer team. She is excited to participate and contribute to the makings of Homecoming.
“I’m looking forward to the rally and decorating for both the football game and the dance,” said Martin.
After seeing the amount of effort and preparation it takes to plan a dance, we think it’s safe to say that we have a newfound appreciation for the cheerleaders!
