The Cross Country season is in full swing! Since June 1, Burroughs runners have been participating in daily practices. Starting in September, runners began adding competitive meets to their schedule.
With each day, the team grows stronger.
“The season has been pretty good and we have performed well in every race,” said freshman varsity runner Oscar Moreno.
The team’s growing strength is reflected in their meet results. At their most recent meet, the MRL Cluster in Sultana, both the Boys and Girls Varsity teams, as well as the JV Boys team came in first place overall. The JV Girls came in second. With each win, the team moves closer to qualifying for CIF.
Though the team works together, every athlete has their own individual goals for the season.
“My goal for the rest of the season is to improve my time and increase my strength and stamina,” said freshman JV runner Tristan Blanton.
With just under a month left in the season for JV runners, and just under two months for varsity runners, the team is in for a busy next few weeks. For the month of October, athletes will compete in their second MRL Cluster Meet in Serrano on October 4, the Clovis Invitational on October 7, their third MRL Cluster Meet in Apple Valley on October 18, the Mt. Sac Invitational on October 20-21, and the JV Invitational in Apple Valley on October 28. Should the Varsity teams qualify for CIF, meets will extend into November. At the moment, the Hesperia and Oak Hills teams appear to be the biggest competition.
Though Cross Country is a challenging sport, it stands out with its positive environment, making it a motivating environment for all runners.
“The Cross Country team is very supportive, no matter how fast or experienced you are,” said freshman JV runner Quan Laskey. “Even though you are running a ton, you still want to come back and try to be better and get faster.”
Though they have a large mixture of both experienced and first-time runners, the team continues to improve through their dedication at both practices and races.
“You don’t need any past experience to do Cross Country,” said Moreno. “In just a few months, you can get to a place where you never thought you could go, and everyone along the way goes through that same experience as well.”
Given the success that the team has had so far, it’s safe to say that Burroughs Cross Country will have a strong season this year!
