Students have already had the opportunity to interact with the media through our newspaper and yearbook courses, but what about audiovisual production?
Well, after nearly a decade, students are now able to help make a newscast through the school’s AV Club.
The AV Club provides students the opportunity to film, edit, and release video broadcasts for students to view.
“The driving mission behind the AV Club is to bring a newscast back in order to increase school spirit on campus,” said AV Club Advisor Melanie Arrieta, who also teaches English and Film Production.
So far, AV Club has released two videos for review: one chronicling the first semester, the second showcasing the this month’s eventful Homecoming week.
Footage includes athletic events, rallies, school activities, Club promotions, and more.
When the first edition was released a few weeks ago, students were very positive about the project and provided great feedback for the HOCO broadcast.
“I think what the AV Club is doing is really cool,” said freshman Daniel Gamboa. “Hearing people’s opinions about what happened, like the Amazing Race, was interesting. HOCO was a really fun week and I liked that we get to have a recap of the activities to remember it or if we didn’t go, we still get to know.”
But the AV Club doesn’t just produce a newscast; several groups around campus, such as our academic counselors and the Special Education department, have requested video projects from the AV Club. These include a PSA on recycling, guiding materials for counselors to give to students during course registration, and much more.
Students can also expect to be able to produce their own projects through the club in the near future. Right now, members are able to submit their own segments on the club’s Canvas page.
The members are very excited to be part of the project.
“I have high hopes for the club and hope we can gain more members through our hard work and quality broadcasts,” said senior Briona Stewart.
To complete their projects, plenty of people have to be involved in the process, from getting segment clips, filming the newscast, editing, anchoring, and other activities.
“If you are interested in learning about video production, this is the club for you!” said Arrieta. “Whether you aspire to make YouTube videos or win an Academy Award for directing someday, this club is a great way to learn about the art and science of video.”
The AV Club meets in room F1, next to the choir room, every other Tuesday at lunch. They also have occasional filming in the mornings.
The first two videos are available for viewing through the online version of this story at BHSBlast.org.
