Girl’s Tennis 2023 is ready to start the new season with its drive to do better than last year. The tennis team has some promising new members this year. The team consists of nine returning and nine new players.
“In my eyes, they all are doing well and making progress,” said Senior Team Co-Captain Shannon Kelly.
Last season, the team went 8-2 in season and was then placed into CIF. They played a wild card match, then advanced to Round 2 where they lost to another school. Overall they did very well.
“[One of the challenges is] to help everyone thrive individually and as a team,” said Coach Barbra Giffin.
This year the team will be trying to be just as good or better than their last season; especially with Giffin working hard to her team the best tennis players they can be.
“We always heavily focus on technique and serves as well as tennis strategies and logic,” said Giffin.
While the team is off to a strong start, they face some challenging competitors.
“Our biggest rival would most likely be Serrano High School,” said Kelly. “Three years ago we broke their winning streak of being the Mohave River League Champions, so naturally there is a lot of tension between us.”
Though the competition is tough, the players grow more eager to beat their rivals with each match.
“I’m most excited to play Serrano because they are an interesting team,” said player Amiaka McIntyre.
The season starts on September 12. The team has a home game on September 19 at 3:15. The girls’ tennis team did have a pre-season match on August 25. It was a home game with an overwhelming win with the overall score being 13 to 5.
Needless to say the girls are excited to get back into the swing of things and work to be the best tennis team they can be.
