The Friends of Rachel Club is always looking for ways to spread kindness, and they started early this year with luau-themed event at High Desert Haven.
On Aug. 26, while most students were recovering from their first couple of weeks back in school, Friends of Rachel members had a blast as they played games and chatted with some of the residents. They played corn hole, coconut bowling, and egg-on-a-spoon race.
The luau was well received by residents of High Desert Haven. Some donned flower leis and hair clips, and most participated in the games. Nearly every seat at the event was filled.
“My favorite part about the luau was seeing the residents get all dressed up and sit together and just have fun watching us play games and playing games themselves,” said FOR Club President Avery Thibado, a BHS senior. “We had a way bigger turnout that I expected, which was great, and I think they had a good time.”
While this was the first year the club has held a luau at High Desert Haven, the club members articipate in a variety of service-based events, such as the Parade of 1,000 Flags and Relay for Life. They also do coat drives, volunteering, and community service. One of the club’s most unique activities is running Rachel’s Closet, a room filled with donated formal wear that students can borrow for dances hosted throughout the year.
Thibado has been part of the club since her sophomore year and believes strongly in the club’s mission of kindness.
“I joined in order to make friends and get more involved in the community and the school,” said Thibado. “I believe that Friends of Rachel can make a great impact on the school and the community.”
She said she would like to encourage new freshmen to participate in their community and try new things.
“If there was anything I could tell the freshmen this year, I would probably tell them to not be afraid to get involved. Join clubs, go to dances, participate in spirit days, cheer at rallies, do all these things because they will make memories that last a lifetime!” said Thibado.
Friends of Rachel hopes to host many events for High Desert Haven throughout the school year alongside their other service projects. If this strikes your interest, listen to the bulletin announcements and make plans to join a meeting!
