The 10th annual Powderpuff Games were held on Oct. 11th and the night was a success. The games were intense and engaging along with a full crowd cheering them on. The final matchup between the senior and junior teams saw the class of 2024 claim victory for the second year in a row.
Along with the amusement of the football events, spectators got to enjoy unique hit drills and cheer routines from their classmates. Each hit drill was intimidating and loud, but the juniors took the win.
As for the fan-favorite male cheerleaders, the seniors stunned the crowd with their moves and won 1st place. They will be performing their routine at the homecoming rally on Thursday, Oct. 13 for all to see.
During the first contest of the night, the freshman faced the juniors. The game was full of successful plays, with the first touchdown scored by junior Isabella Frisbee. Junior Kyla Baird also made an impressive touchdown by catching the football after it bounced off a freshman’s hands.
For being new to Powderpuff, the freshmen played well and came close to making a touchdown in the first half. The final score for the first game was 20-0, with the juniors taking the win and moving on to the championship game.
The second game pitted the sophomores against the seniors and both teams played well. Seniors Gracelynn and Savannah Rowland began the game by scoring touchdowns and extra points. The teams gained most of their yards by making successful runs, with a few that led to touchdowns.
On the sophomores’ team, the defense did well at blocking passes and stopping the seniors’ runs early on.
Sophomore quarterback Danica Gamble and her team gained yards, but the seniors won the second game 27-0 and prepared for the championship against the juniors.
In the third and final game, intense gameplay had spectators on the edge of their seats. The first half of the game began with the seniors scoring two touchdowns and the juniors scoring none.
However, in the second half of the game, Junior Jhavmine Ave scored a spectacular touchdown from midfield. Ave’s accomplishment brought the juniors’ hopes up for victory.
The championship game was full of astonishing plays and effort, with the seniors ultimately taking the win. The final score was 12-6.
“Winning the championship two years in a row with the same team is a moment I’ll never forget,” said senior Jayani Croos-Peterson, one of the night’s leading scorers.
Although they fell to the seniors in the game, the juniors were victorious in the hit drill, even earning praise from their competition.
“They actually looked like a team,” said sophomore Nisha Wallace.
Juniors Daisy Risden and Jhavmine Ave felt good about their effort.
“We liked our beat, we liked our formation, we liked our movements,” said Ave. “Our words were relevant, and everyone contributed.”
As for the cheerleaders, victory was especially sweet after last year’s disappointing loss.
“Ifeltthatallour hard work paid off when we learned that we won and the stress from losing last year went away,” said senior Jacob Karl Fernandez. “This year we really deserved our win and our hard work paid off.”
