Friends of Rachel, a kindness and service oriented club, put together a coin drive during the past couple weeks. Jars were placed in all of the English classrooms and teachers were asked to encourage their students to donate. The club decided to donate the money collected to the JED Foundation.
Friends of Rachel advisor Shari Rosenberg was excited to finally be able to put on a school-wide donation.
“The Friends of Rachel Executive Board researched a number of worthy causes and finally decided on the JED Foundation because it is focused on promoting mental health for youth,” said Rosenberg.
Mental health has been a main concern of many students and teachers after the pandemic. Friends of Rachel Secretary Daniel Stone expressed his thoughts concerning the mental health impact that the JED Foundation has on youth.
“Friends of Rachel felt it was important to fundraise money for mental health, as almost everyone struggled a bit mentally last year due to the pandemic,” said Stone.
Students school-wide seemed to see the coin drive as a great opportunity to help those struggling with mental health. Our motivated and kindhearted students were able to raise $570!
The sophomore class took the coin drive to an entire new level. Teacher Tristan Kratz had extraordinary experiences within her classroom concerning the drive.
“One student in particular donated a portion of his paycheck to the cause because he wants to make a positive impact,” said Kratz. “And once they realized what a few moments of generosity raised, they just kept filling up the jar.”
It is amazing what a small act of kindness can do to change the world and start a chain reaction.
