Whenever I come across movies listed under the “heartfelt” or “feel-good” genre, I quickly click to the next available title. To me, most movies falling under those categories feel fake and boring. However, as we enter into 2021 by staying at home, I find that my usual genres of choice are quickly being drained of new content. So, on one boring Saturday evening, I took a chance on a feel-good movie called “The Peanut Butter Falcon.” I expected very little since I normally stay away from movies of that genre, but I ended up learning some valuable lessons.
“The Peanut Butter Falcon” focuses on Zak (played by Zack Gottsagen), a character with Down’s Syndrome, who runs away from an assisted living facility. He comes across Tyler (played Shia LeBeouf), and together they work to achieve Zak’s dream of becoming a pro show wrestler. As their journey continues, they face many challenges as they get to know each other. But, with the challenges also come some very sweet, heartfelt moments.
This movie also provides many opportunities for viewers to self-reflect. After seeing Tyler’s character develop from grumpy to patient, I realized that I could try to be a little more patient with the people around me, such as my siblings. We also see Zak’s caretaker, Eleanor (played by Dakota Johnson), go from being uptight to adventurous. This also helped me realize that I should find ways to incorporate more adventure into my daily life — most likely when things open back up.
“The Peanut Butter Falcon” also provides much needed representation for the special needs community. By choosing to include a main character with Down’s syndrome, filmmakers enable viewers to see the true abilities that those with disabilities have. I found that after watching this movie, I had a new view on the people within this community. It helped me to realize that although they might have different struggles, people with disabilities are still able to live and thrive independently.
“The Peanut Butter Falcon” is a great movie to watch on your own or as a family. Through its usage of comedy, heartwarming moments, and message of friendship and inclusion, viewers will find themselves reflecting on how they can be a kinder individual to those around them. Not only will viewers learn valuable lessons, but this movie can provide a much-needed positive escape amidst the negativity surrounding our world right now.
If you find yourself on a boring Saturday evening, flipping through endless streaming channels with nothing to watch, don’t pass up the opportunity to watch “The Peanut Butter Falcon.” It will teach you a lesson, put a smile on your face, and make your evening a lot more enjoyable.
