If you are looking for somewhere to expand your creative-writing capacities, look no further than joining Writer’s Ink!
Writer’s Ink is not a new club to Burroughs, but after some students expressed a passion for writing, English Teacher Elisa Preston was inspired to bring it back.
“I thought that it’d be fun to see kids actually get into writing and enjoy it,” said Preston. “I believe that creative writing helps students develop their voice as a writer, giving them more confidence in their writing ability overall; after you’ve done a lot of narratives, for example, even essay writing could get a little easier for you.”
Preston’s excitement in renewing this club has offered a great platform for students to develop their writing skills in a welcoming community.
“Since the club has formed, we’ve gotten a large group of writers together from all high school grade levels,” said Preston.
After Preston started the momentum and welcomed students to join and share, members of the club were excited to participate.
“It’s really something, what Ms. Preston has encouraged us students to do,” said sophomore Jack Roper. “She’s helping people step up, share their own work, and express themselves through their writing.” Club members also participated in the recent Relay for Life event.
“It was nice to see so many Writer’s Ink kids out there showing support for a good cause,” said Preston.
While the clubmembers have goals such as sharing their work with the general public, they are in the early stages — meaning it’s not too late for new members to join and be part of the creative process.
“Because we are still somewhat in the beginning stages, so far we have [only] gone over the election for positions within the club and the foundations of our stories,” said sophomore Vincent Cope.
The club seeks to organize some future activities and push out some writing projects. “Expect some stories from this club to the newspaper soon,” said Roper. “We encourage everyone to at least try it out and share what they write!”
Writer’s Ink club is eager to take on more members. The club meets Fridays at noon in H-4.
“If you’re a student interested in creative writing, please stop by and see what we’re up to on Fridays!” said Preston.
