At the Clovis Invitational on October 10, 2025, senior Eve Washburn made Burroughs High School history, crossing the finish line with a time of 18:44.10 and setting a new girls’ 5K school record.
The race took place at Woodward Park in Clovis, California, a course that’s famous for its rolling hills, sharp turns, and fast competition. It’s also the same course used for the CIF State Championships, which makes Washburn’s accomplishment even more impressive.
“I think the biggest contributing factors to my improvement would be my dedication to cross country and the many hours spent running,” Washburn said. “The three coaches have all helped me be the best runner I can, and the wonderful girls’ team and their support of each other made all the difference.”
Washburn’s performance wasn’t just the result of preparing for a single race; in fact, it was the result of years of training and persistence. From the early-morning practices in the summer, to the hot-afternoon workouts once the school year started, she’s spent countless hours preparing for moments like this. Her dedication is what has made her one of the top runners in Burroughs history and such a leader and an inspiration on the girls’ team.
Still, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. “I think the biggest challenge I’ve faced this season is doubt and uncertainty about how I could perform,” Washburn said. “I knew I’d gotten faster, but I didn’t know how I would do in a race.”
That uncertainty faded as she crossed the finish line, realizing she had not only achieved a personal record but also broken the school record. The moment represented more than just numbers on a clock. It was a reflection of every mile she’s run, every struggle she’s endured, and every bit of confidence that Washburn has been building during her high school career.
As the season continues into the future, Washburn is hoping to carry this momentum into the league meets. Hopefully, this success will continue and propel her forward into the state meet as well. But beyond just her individual success, she’s extremely proud of the team that’s helped her throughout the years.
“I’m really proud of how far our team has come,” she said. “This record means a lot, but what means more is being part of such a supportive group of runners.”
With her record-breaking run at Clovis, Eve Washburn didn’t just set a new mark; she proved that years of determination, teamwork, and self-belief can take you farther than you ever imagined.
