This month marks the ten-year anniversary of the release of the Broadway smash Hamilton, the hit musical recounting the life of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, through a truly American music genre, Hip-hop.
The show celebrated its tenth anniversary by hosting a live event in New York, with the original Broadway cast reuniting for the first time in nine years. After the original celebration, Lin Manuel-Miranda, playwright and star of Hamilton, announced that there was another surprise in order to celebrate the show’s birthday. Manuel-Miranda announced that for the first time ever, Hamilton would be coming to the big screen.
The news that Hamilton would be getting a screening in theatres delighted and surprised fans across the country, who realized that they, too, could celebrate the anniversary. Manuel-Miranda announced that the movie-musical would get both a sing-along and a “first-time friendly” experience. Manuel-Miranda and the original cast encouraged enthusiasm and energy for the audiences of the singalong, while encouraging the audiences of first-timers to they just enjoy the experience and let the music envelop them.
Along with it being the first-ever time Hamilton was displayed on the big screen, viewers also got a glimpse into the making of the musical and pro-shot. The audience learned about the inner workings that went into the show, like the cast’s pre-show rituals, how the cast was formed, and the first screening of Hamilton at the White House, in front of President Barack Obama.
Overall, the addition of Hamilton to theatres revitalized and revived the Hamilton community all over again, bringing fans back together and reminding audiences why we loved the musical so much.
