“I once believed love would be burning red, but it’s golden” sang Taylor Swift prophetically in 2019’s “Daylight.” Now her romantic dreams seem to have come true, with the announcement of her highly-anticipated engagement to Kansas City Chiefs football star Travis Kelce. The announcement has electrified the Swiftie fanbase, including her fans at Burrroughs.
Many students and teachers were caught up in the excitement when Swift took to Instagram with the caption “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” The photos from the engagement depicted the heartfelt moment Kelce went down on one knee to pop the question, surrounded by a majestic garden setup. Swift also flaunted her blinding $500,000 ring. As of press time, the post has accumulated 36.1 million likes.
Although Swift and Kelce’s engagement post went viral, for some students it was Swiftie teachers who broke the news. Spanish Teacher Kayla Monk stopped her fourth-period class in its tracks when she heard of the engagement.
“I glanced at my watch and saw my friend had sent me a post from Taylor Nation,” said Monk. “I immediately googled ‘Taylor Swift’ because my students needed to know.”
Monk said she has enjoyed her music since high school.
“Watching Taylor break glass ceilings, sticking to who she is, and being willing to do things differently has really made me admire her,” said Monk.
English Teacher Kaitlin Hailey, a Swiftie since 2006 when Swift’s self-titled first album was released, is happy that the songstress seems to have found her person.
“Taylor has been making love songs for years and is finally getting married,” said Hailey.
Senior Emilia Tippetts echoed Hailey’s enthusiasm — and is happily contemplating what the Swift-Kelce pairing might mean for a potential performance at next year’s Super Bowl.
“As a major Swiftie, I’m thrilled she’s happy,” said Tippetts. “I’m one of the believers that Taylor will be doing the Super Bowl this year — yes, she is, in fact, too good for it — and I think if the Chiefs get to that point, it will be such an amazing opportunity for both of them, and all the fans.”
Swift is known for mining the ups and downs of her relationships for her lyrics and using her music as an unfiltered outlet for emotions. The result has been chart-topping songs that her fans seek comfort in, cry to, fall in love with, and sing their hearts out to in the car or at karaoke nights with friends. Her muse for those songs has never stayed, until now. Swifties are hopeful that her upcoming album, “Life of a Showgirl,” is filled with songs of passion and long-overdue permanence.
