Burroughs varsity football fans had something to celebrate on Friday, as the Burros ended their long-standing drought with an 8-6 victory over Adelanto.
Moving forward, the Burroughs football team looks like a team to watch, with strong leadership and encouraging captains present in this year’s locker room.
“My goal for the season is to set an exemplary model of what a leader should be,” said Captain Malachi Lutu. “Me, along with the other leaders, have been leading by example and constantly talking about the right way to lead.”
Like every season, Lutu is aware that it’s going to be tough. From early morning workouts to intense summer practices, he’s been ready to keep his team motivated and locked in. He said he is focused on improving the team’s mentality and culture.
“No matter the outcome of a game, my team can look to me to stay motivated and expecting to win,” said Lutu. “I’ll be a symbol of hope through the highs and lows.”
Fellow captain Aaron Washington reflects a similar mindset and inspiring determination.
“Putting it on the line; that’s all you can do,” he said.
The team, hungry for more, is looking forward to several matchups that could set a positive tone this season. West, Bishop, and Sultana are teams that the captains are confident they can beat.
“It’s also personal, because I think we should’ve beat them last year,” said Lutu.
While preparing for these exciting showdowns, Burroughs is fighting for a chance to prove that they can compete with anyone and to become a team the student body can truly be proud of.
For spectators, keep a keen eye out for some key players. Watch out for Jayvion Prothrow, Tyler Warren, Semaj Matthews, and captain Malachi Lutu, who are expected to perform this season.
This team’s goals go beyond just wins and losses. It’s about continuing to raise the standard for Burroughs football; an environment where culture is created and the players constantly push each other to be better, stay disciplined, and to commit 110% of their effort.
This Friday night, Burroughs returns to the field to face off against West Bakersfield, hoping to sustain the momentum from their first win and mark the beginning of a streak. With morale at a high, dedicated leaders, and a campus community ready to cheer them on, the Burroughs football team is ready to make this season one to remember.
