For students juggling sports, extracurriculars, and jobs, the Academic Learning Lounge in room K2 is a quiet sanctuary to keep up with schoolwork. The lounge offers students dedicated time during lunch to complete assignments, make up tests, or get ahead.
The primary draw of the lounge is the quiet environment. Senior Miguel Guerrero visits weekly to finish homework and prepare for upcoming classes.
“I like how the lounge is quiet, and I can be with my friends as I work on my assignments,” said Guerrero.
Led by Science Teacher Jessica Wilson, the Academic Learning Lounge (ALL) supports students whether they need a quiet place to finish an assignment or one-on-one help with a tough subject.
That one-on-one help comes from the ALL’s peer-tutoring program. Peer tutors earn community service hours by helping students in subjects they know well.
“Students who may be shy in class can now ask their questions and get clarification on concepts from peer tutors,” Wilson said. “Peer tutoring can also eliminate the intimidation that some students feel when they approach a teacher.”
The lounge also supports student-athletes at Burroughs. Wilson provides grade and demerit reports to coaches, ensuring that student-athletes stay on track.
“Many coaches refer student athletes to the ALL to work on missing work or get some studying time in before leaving for games or meets,” said Wilson.
Wilson stresses that every student can benefit from what the lounge offers, regardless of their academic standing.
“Come by, bring your lunch and spend even a few minutes finishing your math homework or reading the next chapter of your novel. Everyone is welcome!” said Wilson.
