When considering high school sports, people often think of traditional athletics programs, like football, basketball, or swimming. At Burroughs and other California schools, that list has expanded to include electronic sports, or ESports, which is now recognized by the California Interscholastic Federation, or CIF.
In their first year competing in CIF, the Burroughs ESports team distinguished itself among 200 teams to earn a spot in the 64-team playoff bracket, facing off against ninth-ranked John A. Rowland High School in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competition held during spring break. While they did not win, the experience was a good one.
“Overall, the CIF tournament this year was an upmost positive event,” reflected team captain Kayden Brown. “We won the most games in our club’s history, and for the first time, made it to the top 64 sudden elimination tournament. We accomplished a lot.” With this year’s bracket completed, Brown said he is looking forward to next year.
Advisor Sam Thompson had plenty of positive comments about this year’s team and the possibilities for the future.
“The kids work very hard!” boasted Thompson. “They practice all year, every day at lunch.” He noted that this year’s players are the first ones who have the opportunity to earn a varsity letter. In addition, he sees the team growing, thanks in part to an upcoming feeder program at Murray Middle School.
“They said they are starting their program, so we will actually get kids starting over there. By the time they get here, we might look pretty good.”
