Each year the Burroughs Band participates in an annual festival alongside other area schools to showcase their musical skills and identify areas of growth.
On Thursday, May 20, the symphonic and cadet bands performed at Antelope Valley College, arriving at the school at approximately 10:30 AM, and performing all day in front of three different judges.
These judges made audio commentary throughout the performance, giving the band suggestions before giving them a full clinic where judges were able to give a comprehensive rundown on what the band should change and improve on.
“I thought the experience was extremely enriching,” noted junior Kevin Jones, appreciating the judges’ feedback. “They comment on areas we need to improve, along with providing suggestions on how to do it.”
Overall, the school was said to have performed well, with the symphonic band receiving an “excellent” rating and the cadet band receiving a “good” rating by the judges, who advised the school to improve on balance, dynamics, and tone quality.
The performance was not the only fun part about the day, though, as students were able to enjoy a full day with friends and band members from schools across Southern California.
“The highlight of the festival was getting to walk around after the performance and getting to see the campus with friends,” said senior John Baronowski, who was participating in his fourth festival. “They are always fun to go to and are a nice break from school from time to time.”
Overall, the festival was a success, providing a hands-on experience for hard-working BHS students to showcase their music skills and enjoy a full day of activities with friends.
“I enjoyed the festival a lot, as it gave me an opportunity to play the music that I love for others to experience,” explained Jones. “Beyond that, I got to hang out with many of my friends the entire day and explore around the college campus when we weren’t playing.”
Following their performances and clinics, the students watched the AVC band perform.
The Burroughs performers will be onstage at the Parker Performing Arts Center on May 15 for the Spring Bands Concert.
