Anticipation with a hint of anxiety is in the air for Burrough’s Sophomores because as of March 10, upcoming Juniors should have received a copy of their transcripts and a four-year class planner from their counselors.
Every sophomore’s academic path is different, whether it involves entering the AP world, dual enrollment, or meeting graduation requirements.
Many honors students are looking forward to advancing to the College Board’s AP classes.
“You don’t need to be a genius to be successful in an AP class,” said AP U.S. History Teacher Alexander Grogman. “You need to be extremely motivated… Humility is the best character trait I can point to with students who did well in the class and on the AP exam.”
Mr. Grogman expresses that having the ability to be open-minded, knowing how to apply criticism to your work, time management skills, and a positive attitude with strong dedication will pay off at the end of one’s Junior year.
“I just hope the classes I’ve picked aren’t too hard, to be honest,” said Sophomore Lillian Alvarenga.
Although Alvarenga wants to do the best she can to be able to compete for college admissions, she hopes that she hasn’t gone too far and isn’t putting too much work on herself for next year.
Alongside AP classes, Burroughs also offers many CTE dual enrollment classes for students who are certain of what they wish to pursue in the future.
Sophomore Kassandra Leborne, planning to take a criminal justice dual enrollment program, shares her worries and reasons for wanting college credits in high school.
“I’m more worried about the difficulty of it [dual enrollment classes] and how it’ll interfere with my time,” said Leborne. “I’m aware of the stress that comes with having honors, AP classes, and a mixed college class, but I want to take the course that takes me towards my career.”
She also emphasizes that dual enrollment is more for those who want a taste of their future careers and maybe that final push to realize what they want to do after high school.
Wherever you decide to go, everything will work out for you, no matter how hectic your academic circle seems at the moment. Planning can be scary, but with the right support and guidance, everything will fall into place.
