The Burroughs High School track and field team just received a major boost from one of its own. Marlene Avitia, a 2001 Burroughs graduate and former track star, generously donated $10,000 to the program, giving back to the team that was so important to her.
“I decided to donate to the Burroughs track and field team because of the incredible experience I had as an athlete there,” said Avitia. “The program shaped me not only as a competitor but also as a person, teaching me discipline, perseverance, and the value of teamwork. I wanted to give back to the place that gave me so much and help ensure that future generations of athletes have the same opportunities to grow and succeed.”
Avitia competed in the 800m, 4×400 relay, and pole vault during her time at Burroughs, setting multiple school records, before running track at UC Davis. She is now the Chief Operating Officer for Bailey Brand Management, an exclusive talent agency that represents celebrities in marketing and endorsement deals.
Assistant Principal Chris Ostermann, Avitia’s former coach, recalls her as an outstanding student athlete to work with.
“She always gave 100 percent to school, training, and competition,” he said. His first memories of her are as an elementary student, when she started showing up on the Burroughs track to train with her father for Junior Olympics. “Even at that time, her dedication to success stood out. Once Marlene arrived as a Burroughs athlete, her drive and competitive spirit assured her success.”
Current BHS Track and Field Coach Tony Martin expressed his gratitude for Avitia’s generosity, which has allowed Burroughs to buy customized hurdles to replace the former hurdles borrowed from Cerro Coso.
“I am truly grateful,” said Martin. “I’ve always felt my favorite part of Burroughs High School is the pride that the town and the community take in the school. So to receive this generous donation from a Burroughs alumna puts a huge smile on my face and makes me proud to be part of the Burroughs family.”
Current athletes on the team also recognize the impact of Avitia’s contribution.
“Not only is an alum carrying the Burroughs pride to our team, she’s also providing opportunities and encouragement that will bring many great achievements to the program,” said varsity hurdler Brooklyn Sizemore.
Avitia hopes her donation will inspire future generations of Burroughs athletes to push their limits and take pride in their program.
“Track and field in particular holds a special place in my heart because it challenges individuals both physically and mentally, while also fostering a strong sense of community,” said Avitia. “I hope my donation can contribute to the team’s continued success and inspire young athletes to push their limits, just as I was inspired during my time at Burroughs.”
With this generous donation, Burroughs track and field is looking forward to an exciting future, fueled by the support of those who once stood on the same track dreaming of success.
