BHS Varsity cheerleader Maycee McCrumb represented Varsity Spirit in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu from Dec. 3-9, performing with other All-American cheerleaders in front of thousands of fans lining the streets of Waikiki beach.
This year’s parade marked the 83rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“My favorite part of the whole trip was definitely performing in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Day Parade,” said McCrumb, who participated last year as well. “The parade was so much fun. I loved seeing my little sister’s face light up as I walked by!”
Cheerleaders and dancers who are invited to perform in the ceremony are part of a select group of All-Americans identified at Varsity Spirit summer camps across the country. All-Americans are selected based on superior cheerleading or dance skills as well as leadership skills at camps operated by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) or United Spirit Association (USA). BHS Cheer attended USA Camp at Cal Lutheran this past July.
Only the top 12% of the cheerleaders and dancers from Varsity Spirit camps earn the chance to participate in a performance of this caliber. Once chosen, cheerleaders are required to learn the routines in advance by watching videos. After they arrive in Hawaii, they practice with the other All-Americans to ensure a smooth routine.
While she spent a great deal of time practicing, Maycee did have some time to enjoy the sights.
“The best activity was touring the USS Missouri and getting to see the USS Arizona Memorial,” said McCrumb. “I also loved meeting new friends and spending hours in the pool with them. It truly was an amazing experience, and I’m so happy I got the opportunity!”
