The Parker Performing Arts Center was filled with music on Wednesday — along with the spirit of giving.
During the choral and orchestra programs’ winter concert, Desert Valleys Federal Credit Union Executive Vice President Betty Percifield awarded a $6,000 donation to the Burroughs Music Boosters on behalf of the Roadrunner Ridge Community Foundation, which she chairs. The Foundation offers grants to “enhance educational opportunities, provide financial literacy, address food insecurities, encourage healthy living, and address housing needs within the geographical area served by Desert Valleys Federal Credit Union.
The funds will support the Madrigals’ and Symphonic Orchestra’s upcoming trip to Northern Arizona. During the April 10-12 trip, they will perform with the National Festival of the States, with stops in Flagstaff, Sedona and Walnut Canyon National Monument. While BHS Music Boosters is subsidizing the $950 cost per student, the donation will provide multiple full and partial scholarships and lower the overall price for all, according to Burroughs Music Teacher Amber Petersen.
As part of her presentation, Percifield noted the positive impact that the performing arts can have on students’ lives, and expressed her pleasure at being able to make the trip possible for more students through the foundation’s sponsorship.
Petersen and her groups’ officers expressed their gratitude for the foundation’s generosity.
“I’m so thankful for this generous donation as it truly helps us with the opportunity to travel to Arizona and perform,” said Burroughs junior and Orchestra Club Vice President Angelina Placencia. “Not only will this trip allow us to showcase our music, but it will also help us grow as musicians. The support makes it possible for more students to participate, helping us make the most of this experience.”
