With Thanksgiving break right around the corner, students should take the chance to scour their kitchens for non-perishable foods for Key Club’s canned food drive.
Key Club is hosting its annual canned food drive for the Salvation Army to feed families in need for the upcoming holidays. The canned food drive has been incredibly successful in past years with large numbers of cans in pounds being raised.
Key Club Secretary Audrey Huyen, a sophomore, summed up the “win-win” nature of the food drive.
“It’s really important because I believe that giving back to the community is something that is often overlooked,” said Huyen. “It’s really easy to think that supporting our community means being outside for ten hours raking leaves, but in reality, being considerate of the community can be simple. The community gives so much to us, and we should return the favor. One of the easiest ways is through the canned food drive.”
All it takes is a little bit of compassion and a search through your cupboards. Non-perishable foods include but are not limited to canned fruits and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, granola bars, instant ramen, oatmeal packets, and peanut butter.
Whatever foods you bring, all of the items will make a difference in the lives of families in Ridgecrest. Everyone deserves warm, cozy meals, especially this time of the year.
As encouragement, the classroom that accumulates the most non-perishable foods will receive a special prize! What are you waiting for? Fuel your inner competitiveness and do your part to spread joy to people facing hunger.
Drop donations off in Room K-1 or any participating classroom.
The canned food drive ends Friday, Dec. 13.
