While reading the heroic poem “Beowulf” earlier this year, seniors in Kaitlin Hailey’s English Literature class came up with a funny idea for a skit, even collaborating with Melanie Arrieta’s Film Production class to bring their vision into reality.
Hailey was proud of the creativity and teamwork shown by her students as they took on the project.
“They all bounced ideas off of each other, listened to each other’s ideas, and added to them,” said Hailey. “They didn’t shoot anyone’s idea down.”
The students loved the brainstorming process, coming up with ideas and jokes.
Of course, while the English class made the script and overall plan, the film students did the camera work.
There were definitely some difficult parts in bringing the epic poem to life.
“Trying to track actors’ movement without actually having a dragon there (and trying to hide it) was difficult,” said Edmond Sandoval.
Arrieta was happy to give her students another real-world opportunity to demonstrate their film-making skills.
“They demonstrated all of the professional skills that I’ve been training them on since the beginning of the year, and I’m so proud of how productive they were on set,” said Arrieta. “It was one of the smoothest productions I’ve seen from student filmmakers.”
