It feels like nowadays our society has become hypnotized by technology; however, Burrough High School’s Book Club is reversing that trend with its weekly get-togethers.
“Our meetings usually consist of us talking about the book we are reading, what we’re looking forward to reading, or fun activities such as potlucks!” says Club President Haley Hengsteler, a junior.
Hengsteler believes that those who crave new experiences and love reading anything and everything should consider joining.
However, the aspect that people seem to love about Book Club is the community that is built within it.
“The people in Book Club have always been supportive, and I find that the friendships I have made go past just book buddies,” said sophomore Estella Spurlock, a second-year Book Club member. Spurlock added that she enjoys how inclusive the club is, that even if you don’t have an officer position, your words still get heard by discussions and voting systems.
Club Advisor Eileen Poole especially enjoys the group discussions that the Book Club holds.
“When you discuss a book in a group, you are privy to insights that aren’t your own,” Poole said. “It adds richness to the understanding and enjoyment of the novel.”
Poole said that it brings her hope to see students coming together to discuss books and have so much fun with each other doing so.
She adds that Book Club isn’t continuing year after year because of any push from her, but because of returning students who want to make it happen.
They are currently reading “The Witch in the Well” by Camilla Bruce, decided by a voting system by the members.
If this title seems familiar, or even interesting in any way, be sure to give Book Club a chance. If not, they will be exploring and reading works of all genres and styles, so make sure to keep an eye out for any news by attending the meetings and listening to the bulletin.
Meetings are in PACC 5 every Thursday.
